COMPETENCIES
Competency and Artifact |
Description |
The safety of our students is very important. I was in charge of sending out a reminder to parents that during carpool, they are not to turn left into the school. This is to ensure that traffic keeps moving. The street the school is on is not very wide and is only two lanes. I was very particular about the wording I used since this was going home to parents. |
My problem of practice challenged me to take on a different role. Instead of implementing the interventions, I oversaw the implementation. I kept in constant communication with the fifth grade team and met with them often to gain insight on the successes and struggles of creating appropriate interventions for their students. |

PLTs are a time for collaboration. However, when there are many different personalities, there can also be conflict. There was not an argument, but a disagreement. Disagreements are healthy and this one was no different. I attended a PLT meeting during this disagreement and saw how the conflict was resolved. Because both teachers approach instruction differently, there was a need for negotiation - which both were willing to do. |
When it comes to student discipline, it is important to be able and willing to think outside the box. A student had multiple referrals to the office, which prompted me to work with his Bengal Buddy and his teacher to come up with a solution that would decrease referrals and teach necessary behaviors. |

Often at WSES, we have parents drop in with concerns. It is our stance that a parent's time is limited so we usually invite them in, listen to them, and address their concern. I had multiple opportunities to have conversations with parents in this setting. This is an example of a meeting I had with a parent concerned about her daughter being bullied in class. |
During our town meetings, various teachers will provide coverage for teachers to have a longer PLT. This requires a schedule of coverage. I created this coverage schedule for the 2020-2021 school year. |
In collaboration with our SIP, our teachers participated in learning rounds. These proved to be effective in inspiring our teachers to look at what changes they may make to their instruction. The admin team collaborated on creating questions to guide their discussion. It was not necessary to use the questions. We encouraged organic conversations. However, if the grade level felt stuck, these questions could help guide their thinking. |
In order to serve students better, I always wanted to know everything I could about them. I would ask teachers and other staff members who know the child to provide any pertinent information I would need to best work with them. In this example I have notes about a new student. To work successfully with the student, an adult would need to know his background. |
This year, I worked with the PTA to show appreciation to our bus drivers. It is important to model that you recognize the contributions of the whole school community. I was honored to be a part of this and am hopeful that the bus drivers felt loved. |
Teachers often struggle with global awareness on their observations. I observed our music teacher and facilitated the post-conference. During the post-conference, we discussed ways that she could incorporate global awareness into her lessons. |
Judgement comes into play each time you make a decision regarding student behavior. This form is an example of how I made the decision regarding consequences for a student. This student did not start the fight, and therefore his consequences were not as severe. |
I am one of the few who still relies on a paper schedule instead of digital. This is my July, 2019. I just started at WSES. The principal handed me a to-do list which you will see on the left side that I rewrote to make more sense to me. I have meetings and reminders as well. |
At WSES, there were certain duties I was responsible for. However, I always offered to cover someone else's duties as well. This showed the staff that I am willing to do what is expected of them as well. The duties I covered include: carpool (am and pm), lunch, recess, bus (am and pm), classroom, and hallway. |
As a leader with a young family, I am continuously working to find the home/work balance. This picture shows on my schedule that while I did attend the Book Fair Family Night, I only attended for a thirty minute window. The admin took turns attending that night so that we could all have time at home as well. |
I worked very hard to take anything off the plate of the assistant principal. I would intervene and take discipline issues and ask her every day what I could take on. Here is an email that shows this. |
At WSES, we are dedicated to student success. This picture shows the students in groups teachers identified they needed. These students are close to getting a 4 on the EOG, but for reasons outside of academics are not. |
I found out through an email that a teacher had lost her grandmother. Since we were all homebound and I wasn't able to see her face to face, I decided to call her instead. This is the email that prompted me to call her. |
At the beginning of the year, I was tasked with creating the Emergency Operations Plan. This is important because it is our guidelines for a variety of crises. |
After everyone was sent home due to the COVID-19, I created a video of our teachers sending messages to their students and relaying well wishes to them. |
This email shows that I would respond to emails early before the teachers arrived so that when they did, I had more time to focus on them. Checking and replying to emails is always my first task. |
The admin team created these questions for teachers to use during their learning rounds. They were not necessary, but available if the teachers needed help with conversation. |
