STANDARD SIX: External Development Leadership
A school executive will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership. Acknowledging that schools no longer reflect but in fact build community, the leader proactively creates with staff opportunities for parents, community and business representatives to participate as “stockholders” in the school such that continued investments of resources and good will are not left to chance.
6A: Parent and Community Involvement and Outreach
The principal designs structures and processes which result in parent and community engagement, support and ownership for the school.
The Baby Bengal Buddy Breakfast is a yearly celebration for students and the adults in the school who support them. Students are paired with a staff member who touches base with them throughout the year and acts as an informal mentor for the student. During the breakfast, the students and their buddy along with the students' families have time for fellowship. It is a high anticipated event. This is an important initiative since it positively bridges the school community. An administrator needs to have a vision and support what is important to the school. I supported this initiative by planning and facilitating the breakfast.

Monthly fire drills are a requirement. Along with them are two inspections that have to be completed. The form I am attaching is what schools complete and turn into the county. At our school, we consistently change up where we pull the alarm since the pulls have to be reset in different ways. Having witnessed and participated in this, I can see how a leader needs to be knowledgeable of not just the processes for running a fire drill, but how to reset the alarms.

At the beginning of each school year, administrators create an Emergency Operations Plan to cover basic emergencies and crises. This is created to ensure staff follow the correct protocols regardless of who is in the building. I worked to create this plan. As an administrator, I reflected on this plan as different crises arose at the school and see the benefit of having the document.

In our law class, we studied different law briefs and discussed the impact they have on us as administrators. In this situation, the court ordered the public school system to pay for a child to attend a private school where they could receive a more appropriate education. The school system determined they could not meet the student's needs. As an administrator, communication and transparency are very important. Knowing the law and what a school system can be held responsible for will guide me in making the right educational decisions for a student.
